Course description: Classes will be designed to cater for beginners and the most experience with demonstrations and individual assistance provided. We will explore different techniques for hand building and strengthen your skills on the potter’s wheel. At the same time, we will experiment with texture and ceramic glazes using a variety of painting techniques. You will be encouraged to try all forms of hand building using your own ideas based on drawings and or digital images.

Dear Students

Thank you so much for your patience during these unprecedented pandemic times. We have taken a while to get classes up and running to ensure that we can comply with the Covid safety guidelines and the 2^nd wave of cases nearby.

The good news is that Term 4 classes will recommence in October and I’m writing to let you know first. We are minimising the numbers in the class, so we wanted to contact our previous students rather than advertising outside for this Term.

Covid Safe rules will apply to all students and staff when attending the studio. A sign in register and hand sanitisers will be required on entry to studio. If you have the slightest sign of an illness, please do not attend. (Further Covid compliance guidelines for PCAI studio will be supplied on confirmation of your enrolment).

The class fee has increased slightly, due to reduced class size and external costs to PCAI.

We are so lucky to have secured our beloved Peter Dwyer back again this Term as a teacher , as Peter is very much in demand as a TAFE tutor and is undertaking his PHD studies in Ceramics at the National Art School, Sydney. So please book in ASAP as this may be Peters last Term with us for a while.

Some of you have a 2 week credit from last Term, which we can honour in a course fee reduction or by attending a 6 hour class on a Saturday during Term( date TBC). I will contact those people directly.

Friday Night Chill Out Ceramics  

These Chill-Out nights provide a nice alternative to end of the week gatherings. You can bring a bottle of wine and some snacks and PCAI staff will provide you with a step by step pottery project that can be completed within the timeframe. Pieces are then glazed and fired to be collected at a later date.

Cost:  $60 per person includes firing fee

Details: Examples of a hand building clay projects include: making or decorating mugs, bowls, sculpture, making figurines, flatware vessels to name but a few projects. NB: we don’t do pottery wheels in the Chill out Sessions. Bookings for these can be made as individual or group.

NB: we require at least 6 people for the Chill Out Session to run.

Course description

Rob Linigen Glaze mixing for cone 6 (1220oC) workshops
Enrich your glaze surfaces with this 2 day workshop with Rob Linigen. Learn to mix your own
cone 6 glazes, and extend your range of colours and surfaces. You’ll learn some basic glaze
chemistry and practical testing methods to adapt and apply glazes to your clay and firing.
Troubleshoot your glaze problems and learn to apply glaze consistently and creatively.

Recommended clays for cone 6 (1220oC)
The clay we will be testing on is mainly Keanes Midfire No 6 which is fine white throwing
clay, good for tableware. Less than 1% absorption at full cone 6
We will also do some sampling on Keanes Lumina Midfire porcelain and the new Black
Midfire clay.

About Rob Linigen
Rob Linigen is a master potter, al round good guy, and a teacher passionate about
experimenting with glaze and firing techniques. As former Senior Head Teacher Fine Arts,
Nepean College WSI TAFE, he will help you to develop your skills in ceramics to the highest
level.
His studio is based in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney amidst a lovely bushland setting.
PCAI have experienced the passion and generosity of Robs teaching during our Raku
workshop programs at his studio, over the past 2 winters and hopefully will again this year.

2 weeks notification prior to commencement of class is required if cancelling your enrolment. A $20 cancellation fee applies
As there is a large waiting list for classes, no refunds or make up classes are available once class commences for missed classes, for change of mind, or failure to attend. In dire personal circumstances a partial refund may be considered. Conditions apply. Students must contact Director immediately to be considered.

Gift Voucher
If you have received a Gift Voucher you still need to book into the program via the online Booking Form. Instead of payment details simply place Gift Voucher number in Notes section of Form. Vouchers can be purchased via email. Gift Vouchers are valid for 24 months from date of purchase.

Waiting List
Class sizes are limited to 10 to 12 persons per class and fill very fast. If classes are full, this will be advised on the online booking Form. If a place opens when term has commenced you will be advised and pay the full rate or a pro rata rate (if you miss a class) for the remainder of Term.

Additional Needs and Physical ability
PCAI is an accessible venue for most although there is one step to the bathroom to navigate. A wheelchair accessible bathroom is available nearby.

Using the pottery wheel can be physically challenging for some with the following conditions: arthritis in or injury to hands; neck or back pain, reduced strength or limited motion in upper arms and shoulders; later trimester of pregnancy; Hip or Foot injury.

There are ways to modify the wheel throwing experience but please consider your physical capacity prior to enrolling in a wheel throwing class. We provide many options hand building with clay, as an alternative to the pottery wheel experience. Please feel free to contact us to discuss any addition needs further, so we may be of assistance.

Materials
Your materials fee covers a bag of clay, coloured slips and glazes per student.
Additional materials such as underglaze and tissue transfers can be purchased from the studio and are not included in materials fee.
For home studio use Clay can be purchased from the studio at discounted prices however orders need to be placed in advance.

Extra firings
PCAI kilns are always full, due to large student numbers. Occasionally we can fire some extra pieces, however a cost for bisque and glaze firings for work made outside of class time is necessary. Pieces can only be fired when kiln space is available as priority is given to PCAI enrolled student work. There are kiln firing services available at Blackwattle ceramics.

If an excess of materials is used during class, students may be asked to refine their work and select only the best for firing or to pay an additional fee for kiln space and materials used.

2 weeks notification prior to commencement of class is required if cancelling your enrolment. A $20 cancellation fee applies

As there is a large waiting list for classes, no refunds or make up classes are available once class commences for missed classes, for change of mind, or failure to attend.  In dire personal circumstances a partial refund may be considered. Conditions apply. Students must contact Director immediately to be considered.

Gift Voucher

If you have received a Gift Voucher you still need to book into the program via the online Booking Form. Instead of payment details simply place Gift Voucher number in Notes section of Form. Vouchers can be purchased via email. Gift Vouchers are valid for 24 months from date of purchase.

PCAI offers a range of courses for all levels of participation: from beginners to ongoing and advanced wheelwork and hand building with clay.

Our tutors are highly qualified, experienced artists who wish to foster students who can commit to a willing to commit to the focused learning environment that PCAI offers every student as ceramic arts practice takes time and patience to master.   

For those looking for less commitment to try with friends or in a group as a social activity, why not consider the weekend program which includes:  themed short activities in clay; Master Classes; Friday night chill out sessions.  PCAI can also customise group sessions over the weekend.

PCAI kilns are always full, due to large student numbers. Occasionally we can fire some extra pieces, however a cost for bisque and glaze firings for work made outside of class time is necessary. Pieces can only be fired when kiln space is available as priority is given to PCAI enrolled student work.  There are kiln firing services available at Blackwattle ceramics.

 

If an excess of materials is used during class, students may be asked to refine their work and select only the best for firing or to pay an additional fee for kiln space and materials used.

Raku  Workshop June 1 2019 9am

Raku ware is a type of Japanese pottery traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies, most often in the form of Chawan tea bowls. .

Raku is a process in which work is removed from the kiln at bright red heat and subjected to post-firing reduction (or smoking) by being placed in containers of combustible materials.

What to bring to Firing:

Clothing

MUST wear ENCLOSED SHOES, LONG SLEEVES AND A NECKLINE THAT COVERS THE THROAT, LONG PANTS, and NATURAL FIBRES NOT SYNTHETICS OR POLY COTTON BLENDS THAT WILL MELT OR SUPPORT FIRE:  No flowing or trailing hanging bits of clothing or jewellery.

Cap or tie long hair back. Cotton overalls are perfect. If not wearing suitable clothing you won’t get up close to the action due to OH & S concerns.  

Lunch:

Please bring along a picnic lunch

Your own ceramic mug:-Tea and coffee making available at the studio

A picnic rug or chair to sit on to enjoy the beautiful views of the mountains and duck pond

Weather

It may be cold in June at Leura, so rug up. We will notify you if weather is deemed unsuitable for firing.

Workshop details

This session is designed for students enrolled in current or previous classes who would like a day of uninterrupted clay play, or to those who wish to try ceramics for the first time.

Tutors will be on hand to assist and demonstrate for the day.

Works made on the day can be finished in class or at home and brought back to the studio for firing.  Additional costs for firing may be applied to large works or quantities exceeding the materials provided on the day.  

Opportunity to sell work

Students are encouraged to bring along any ceramic pieces they wish to sell on the day as we will be holding a stall for ParraPickers market on the street front. You will need to price the artwork. Why not pot-up some succulents in those pots that may have an imperfection?

This class is has a focus on hand building and sculptural ceramics, and will also involve wheel work for those interested. Pieces are made and decorated using a variety of surface design techniques, texture, and colour, incising and glazing.

Using the pottery wheel can be challenging physically for some with the following conditions: arthritis in or injury to hands; neck or back pain, reduced strength or limited motion in upper arms and shoulders; later trimester of pregnancy; Hip or Foot injury.

 

There are ways to modify the wheel throwing experience but please consider your physical capacity prior to enrolling in a wheel throwing class. We provide many options for hand building with clay as an alternative to the pottery wheel experience.

Materials

Your materials fee covers a bag of clay, coloured slips and glazes per student.

 Additional materials such as underglaze and tissue transfers can be purchased from the studio and are not included in materials fee.

For home studio use Clay can be purchased from the studio at discounted prices however orders need to be placed in advance.  

 

Extra firings

There will be a cost for bisque and glaze made outside of class time. Pieces can only be fired when kiln space is available as priority is given to PCAI enrolled student work.

If an excess of materials is used during class, students may be asked to refine their work and select only the best for firing or to pay an additional fee for kiln space and materials used.

You will be instructed in the art of teapot assemble. You assemble leather- hard clay body , adding the spout , lid and handles. The use of sprigs, clay extrusions, textures and colours will personalise your teapot. No prior experience needed.
