Dear Students

Thank you so much for your patience during these unprecedented pandemic times. We have taken a while to get classes up and running to ensure that we can comply with the Covid safety guidelines and the 2nd wave of cases nearby.

The good news is that Term 4 classes will recommence in October and I’m writing to let you know first. We are minimising the numbers in the class, so we wanted to contact our previous students rather than advertising outside for this Term.

Covid Safe rules will apply to all students and staff when attending the studio. A sign in register and hand sanitisers will be required on entry to studio. If you have the slightest sign of an illness, please do not attend. (Further Covid compliance guidelines for PCAI studio will be supplied on confirmation of your enrolment).

The class fee has increased slightly, due to reduced class size and external costs to PCAI.

We are so lucky to have secured our beloved Peter Dwyer back again this Term as a teacher , as Peter is very much in demand as a TAFE tutor and is undertaking his PHD studies in Ceramics at the National Art School, Sydney. So please book in ASAP as this may be Peters last Term with us for a while.

Some of you have a 2 week credit from last Term, which we can honour in a course fee reduction or by attending a 6 hour class on a Saturday during Term( date TBC). I will contact those people directly.

Venue: PCAI Gallery & Studio: Shop 5 / 4-14 Hunter Street, Parramatta
Cost: $45 each
The concept of this workshop is for children to design a funny faced pot to contain
soil from which to plant cress, alfalfa or other herbs, which become the pots head of
hair. The design of the planter will enable children to consider space, form and
function to hold the soil for the plant to thrive. The function of the pot becomes
aesthetically pleasing with addition of the hairdo which becomes edible!
The pots will be coloured if time permits using slips, then bisque fired and clear
glazed.
They will be ready to collect in approximately 3 weeks from date of workshop.

FLATWARE CERAMICS:
Date: 3rd March
Time: 2pm-5pm
Venue: PCAI Gallery & Studio: Shop 5 / 4-14 Hunter Street, Parramatta
Cost: $80 each
Flatware vases and vessels are popular because they are both functional and
beautiful as free standing or wall vases for interior or exterior use.
In this workshop you will learn how to use cut slabs of clay in order to create the
form.
The surface decoration of the form can be incised, cut, or embellished further with
the additions of clay pieces and sprigs. Finally you will have the opportunity to colour
and or draw on your flatware using paint on slips and oxides.
The work will then be dried, bisque fired and finally put through a glaze firing.
Your piece will be ready to collect in approximately 20 days.

COLOURED CLAY INLAY VESSELS,
Date: 10 March,
Time: 2pm-5pm
Venue: PCAI Gallery & Studio: Shop 5 / 4-14 Hunter Street, Parramatta
Cost: $80 each
In this workshop you will be designing and decorating a clay slab form. This can be
used as a wall plaque or a platter.
Initially the clay is rolled flat then inlayed using a range of coloured clays. Once the
design is formulated, the small pieces of coloured clays are rolled / imbedded into
the clay slab..
The piece is then dried ready for bisque firing and finally a clear glaze is applied and
the piece is refired, ready to collect in 3 weeks.

Additional Needs and Physical ability

PCAI is an accessible venue for most although there is one step to the bathroom to navigate however a wheelchair accessible bathroom is available nearby.

Using the pottery wheel can be challenging physically for some with the following conditions: arthritis in or injury to hands; neck or back pain, reduced strength or limited motion in upper arms and shoulders; later trimester of pregnancy; Hip or Foot injury.

There are ways to modify the wheel throwing experience but please consider your physical capacity prior to enrolling in a wheel throwing class. We provide many options for hand building with clay as an alternative to the pottery wheel experience.

Please feel free to contact us to discuss any addition needs further, so we may be of assistance.

Materials

Your materials fee covers a bag of clay, coloured slips and glazes per student.

Additional materials such as underglaze and tissue transfers can be purchased from the studio and are not included in materials fee.

For home studio use Clay can be purchased from the studio at discounted prices however orders need to be placed in advance.

Extra firings

Unfortunately PCAI kilns are always full. Occasionally we can fire some extra pieces, however a cost for bisque and glaze firings for work made outside of class time is necessary. Pieces can only be fired when kiln space is available as priority is given to PCAI enrolled student work. There are kiln firing services available at Blackwattle ceramics.

If an excess of materials is used during class, students may be asked to refine their work and select only the best for firing or to pay an additional fee for kiln space and materials used.
