Raku Workshop
Raku ware is a type of Japanese pottery traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies, most often in the form of Chawan tea bowls. .
Raku is a process in which work is removed from the kiln at bright red heat and subjected to post-firing reduction (or smoking) by being placed in containers of combustible materials.
2 Workshops in June: Firing Dates EITHER Sat 16 June, Sat June 23, 2018
- Limited to 8 people per workshop
Week 1 will entail making ceramic work for the firing at PCAI Hunter St Studio in Parramatta
Week 2 is the Raku Firing which will take place at Leura in the home Studio of Master potter Robert Linigen

After many years teaching Ceramics at Nepean TAFE, Rob Linigen now works and teaches at his beautiful Leura clay studio.
Details are as follows:
Making Raku Pieces workshop: PCAI Studio, Shop 5 10-14 Hunter St, Parramatta (Free street parking out front on Sundays)
Date: Sunday, June 3
Time: 10 am to 12-30 pm
Cost: $50
In this workshop you will make suitably sized pieces from Raku clay. These pieces will be bisque fired at our studio ready for the Raku Firing day. A Maximum of 3-4 pieces, depending on size will be made.(Max height 300 mm, and weight has to be light enough to lift with tongs) .
* For Students enrolled in current classes at PCAI you can skip this workshop and make your pieces in class. So you don’t pay $50

What to bring to Firing:
Clothing
MUST wear ENCLOSED SHOES, LONG SLEEVES AND A NECKLINE THAT COVERS THE THROAT, LONG PANTS, and NATURAL FIBRES NOT SYNTHETICS OR POLY COTTON BLENDS THAT WILL MELT OR SUPPORT FIRE: No flowing or trailing hanging bits of clothing or jewellery.
Cap or tie long hair back. Cotton overalls are perfect. If not wearing suitable clothing you won’t get up close to the action due to OH & S concerns.
Lunch:
Please bring along a picnic lunch
Your own ceramic mug:-Tea and coffee making available at the studio
A picnic rug or chair to sit on to enjoy the beautiful views of the mountains and duck pond
Weather
It may be cold in June at Leura, so rug up. We will notify you if weather is deemed unsuitable for firing.
