Rob Linigen Glaze mixing for cone 6 (1220oC) workshops
Enrich your glaze surfaces with this 2 day workshop with Rob Linigen. Learn to mix your own
cone 6 glazes, and extend your range of colours and surfaces. You’ll learn some basic glaze
chemistry and practical testing methods to adapt and apply glazes to your clay and firing.
Troubleshoot your glaze problems and learn to apply glaze consistently and creatively.

Recommended clays for cone 6 (1220oC)
The clay we will be testing on is mainly Keanes Midfire No 6 which is fine white throwing
clay, good for tableware. Less than 1% absorption at full cone 6
We will also do some sampling on Keanes Lumina Midfire porcelain and the new Black
Midfire clay.

About Rob Linigen
Rob Linigen is a master potter, al round good guy, and a teacher passionate about
experimenting with glaze and firing techniques. As former Senior Head Teacher Fine Arts,
Nepean College WSI TAFE, he will help you to develop your skills in ceramics to the highest
level.
His studio is based in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney amidst a lovely bushland setting.
PCAI have experienced the passion and generosity of Robs teaching during our Raku
workshop programs at his studio, over the past 2 winters and hopefully will again this year.

Workshop Details

Cost: $250 for both days: includes all test tiles and firings

Students should bring
A note book and pen, camera, a USB stick, lunch (There is an RSL club nearby that serves
light snacks).
Bring along a sample of a glaze giving you any problems for trouble shooting on day 2, when
Rob will investigate the glaze recipe and firing temp.

Raku  Workshop June 1 2019 9am

Raku ware is a type of Japanese pottery traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies, most often in the form of Chawan tea bowls. .

Raku is a process in which work is removed from the kiln at bright red heat and subjected to post-firing reduction (or smoking) by being placed in containers of combustible materials.

Clothing

MUST wear ENCLOSED SHOES, LONG SLEEVES AND A NECKLINE THAT COVERS THE THROAT, LONG PANTS, and NATURAL FIBRES NOT SYNTHETICS OR POLY COTTON BLENDS THAT WILL MELT OR SUPPORT FIRE:  No flowing or trailing hanging bits of clothing or jewellery.

Cap or tie long hair back. Cotton overalls are perfect. If not wearing suitable clothing you won’t get up close to the action due to OH & S concerns.  

Lunch:

Please bring along a picnic lunch

Your own ceramic mug:-Tea and coffee making available at the studio

A picnic rug or chair to sit on to enjoy the beautiful views of the mountains and duck pond

After many years teaching Ceramics at Nepean TAFE, Rob Linigen now works and teaches at his beautiful Leura clay studio.

Details are as follows:

Making Raku Pieces workshop: PCAI Studio, Shop 5 10-14 Hunter St, Parramatta (Free street parking out front on Sundays)

Date:   Sunday, June 3 

Time:   10 am to 12-30 pm

Cost:  $50

In this workshop you will make suitably sized pieces from Raku clay. These pieces will be bisque fired at our studio ready for the Raku Firing day. A Maximum of 3-4 pieces, depending on size will be made.(Max height 300 mm, and weight has to be light enough to lift with tongs) .

* For Students enrolled in current classes at PCAI you can skip this workshop and make your pieces in class. So you don’t pay $50

Tile Murals

Date: Sat 7 October

Who: Children 5 yrs + and Parents /carers (Family up to 5 persons)

Activity: Create a family tile mosaic for your wall or garden. Pieces will be fired and glazed for collection at a later date.

Nest Bowls

Activity: Nest of 3 bowls: – You will design and create your own nest of functional bowls using moulds and design techniques. Pieces will be fired and glazed for collection at a later date.

Cookie Jars

Activity: Children embellish wheel thrown forms to create a highly original lidded cookie jar. Pieces will be fired and glazed for collection at a later date.

Up Late Wed October 11^th

PCAI Studio and Gallery will be Opening to the public who can come in, browse, purchase ceramic works made by PCAI artists and check out our bright studio and the programs PCAI offers the community; see the studio in action as the Wednesday evening sculptural ceramic class is in progress.  Join us for a beverage in a handmade ceramic mug.

2 Sundays in August, 2017

With Somchai Chareon, Master Mould Maker

Date: Sunday  6 and 13 August, 2017

Time: 10 am to 3 pm each day

Venue: PCAI Gallery and Studio – Shop5, 10-14 Hunter Street, Parramatta

Cost:  $140

Day 1: participants will learn the basic techniques required to create a one –piece own mould for slip casting under the instruction of our master mould maker.

Day 2: Participants will learn the process for making a more complex 2-part mould and are encouraged to bring in a favourite item for recasting, such as a plastic or glass ornament, or you can make a clay model ( needs to be leather hard) for casting. Items must not exceed 15cm diameter x 8cm wide x 10 cm high.

Somchai Chareon is an experienced potter who has specialised in mould making and slip casting techniques, learnt in Thailand. His work has been exhibited widely and he has been a master presenter at workshops and seminars in Australia and internationally.

We are very privileged at PCAI to be hosting Somchai s’ 2- day workshops in Parramatta.

                        Somchai Charoen is a Thai born ceramic artist based in Sydney who has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Trained in industrial ceramic design, he was a former lecture at Silpakorn University, Thailand. Since migrating to Australia in 2001, he has worked commercially as a mould and model maker as well as establishing his ceramic homewares label Eat Clay. Somchai has been working with many artists, designers and ceramics companies including Ben Quilty, Hany Armanious, Rod Bamford , Trent Jansen  Mud Australia and Bison Australia. He is a co-founder of Belmore ITCH, a residency for non-ceramic artist to explore and interpret the medium.

In this 3 hour weekend workshop participants will be making a beautiful ceramic Christmas Tree candle light complete with gift tags and tree ornaments.

About Glenda Hoy

I first experienced clay at 12 years old making one bowl in my school art
class. I was captivated by the fact you could create an item of beauty from
essentially a handful of dirt. Many years later I rediscovered my
fascination with clay and the beauty of porcelain.  My work has varied over
the past 30 years, I push porcelain to its limits, making fine tableware on
the wheel. Then I have balanced this need for perfection with working in the
Japanese aesthetics of handmade functional or sculptural item in woodfired
and raku in heavier clays as they give a more random piece.  I find working
in clay so relaxing and am always surprised at what I can do what I think
outside of the box.   I love sharing ideas with others and always look
forward to seeing the enjoyment of mucking around with clay bring to all who
try!

Susie McMeekin

PCAI is thrilled to announce the amazing master potter Susie McMeekin workshop program.

Workshop Details

Over the course of the first 2 sessions Susie will demonstrate simple throwing, handling, turning, and throwing larger two- piece pots and teapots.

You will get to try throwing while Susie will work with you on any problems that you may have preparing pots for firings and or glazing.  The last session will cover some basic dipping and decorating hands-on glaze/ colouring techniques and Susie will respond to any questions that have arisen during the workshops.

Bio

Susie McMeekin is a potter of 38 years experience. She lives in Katoomba in The Blue Mountains about 100 kilometres west of Sydney, Australia.

Susie is one of the few second-generation potters in Australia. She is one of two daughters of Ivan McMeekin distinguished Australian potter. He was the founder of the Sturt pottery workshop Mittagong and a founding member of Potters Society of Australia. Susie started working with her Dad in 1978.

She works in Porcelain and Stoneware. Concentrating on only a few glazes, Chun, Celadon, Tea Dust and Ying Ching.
