11 March, 10am–12.30pm

In this workshop, children will explore the joys of clay while raising their awareness about the endangered animals of our planet. The cookie jars will provide a reminder about the need to care for our endangered species.

Children will embellish pre-made wheel-thrown lidded forms to which they will add animal features using clay. The lidded jars will then be decorated with coloured slips.

Pieces will be bisque fired and glazed and will be ready for collection approximately 3 weeks after this workshop.

10 am–1 pm

This is an opportunity for you and your child to work together on a fun clay project. You will construct a contemporary sculptural form such as those you might see in public art installations. They may be cubic or flat or circular forms – anything goes as long as it is technically strong. Our tutor will be on hand to help you with your design concepts.

The clay will be rolled flat, allowed to stiffen a little, then joined using slurry. Prior to joining, the pieces will be textured and imprinted. This technique enables the glaze to highlight the imprinted design within the piece when fired.

At the end of the workshop you will have made a sculptural piece to add to your home or garden. Artworks completed on the day will need to be dried and fired in the kiln to be collected at a later date.

No experience necessary. For ages 5+.

Note: The venue is four blocks from Parramatta Station. There is free street parking out front on Sundays.

The Art of Making Teapots – Booked out – complete form to be added to waitlist

2 pm–5 pm

Inspired by the Festival theme, Make or Break, Parramatta Clay and Arts Inc. have designed this clay workshop where participants will have the opportunity to piece together the required forms – body, spout and handle – to create their own usable teapot.

How a teapot holds and pours liquid is a very special design technique. Many things must be considered when making teapots, such as the weight of the pot, the length of the spout and its ability to pour, the security of the lid, the strength of the handle, plus the changes that occur to the form when the pot is subjected to heat in the kiln.

Our potters will make the pieces that form a teapot and you will construct your very own functional teapot taking into account the above factors.

The pieces will be fired and glazed ready for collection at a later date.

Slab ware is a terrific way to make clay forms. The clay is rolled flat and allowed to stiffen just enough so it can be cut and formed into shapes and assembled using slurry and sponges.

In this three-hour workshop participants will be amazed at the 3D forms such as vases and vessels that can be constructed. For example, many 1950s vases were constructed using this technique.

Tutors will be on hand to help you design your concept, however the technique is quite simple. As long as the pieces are joined well, you will be amazed how easily you can design and assemble your slab ware.

The pieces will be coloured or textured prior to assemblage to provide a unique piece for your home. Works will be fired and clear glazed and ready to collect three weeks after the workshop.

Thanks and big shout outs to fellow pop-ups and shopkeepers and Parramatta City Council for this opportunity.
All works are unique limited edition items created by local artists. Your support motivates our artists to produce quality handmade products.
It also informs us about custom requests and assists our artists with fabulous feedback and market research about what ceramic products our customers like.
Your purchases also support ParraClay, with financial support for local artist and more importantly towards building the
Clay Cliff Creek Studio, soon to open in George Street Parramatta.
At long last Parramatta will have a venue where the community can attend classes in a dedicated ceramic studio!
